In Great Britain the Department
for Transport estimate that 10% of all accidents are caused by driver
fatigue. However, that figure may be much higher. Fatigue and sleepiness
are not as easy to pinpoint in the aftermath of an accident as say
alcohol or drugs.
The Loughborough Sleep Research Centre with the UK Police
estimate that 20% of accidents on major roads and motorways are
caused by sleepiness and that sleepy drivers kill more people than
drink drivers! Also, the severity of fatigue related accidents tends
to be much worse than accident caused by other circumstances.
Now we are not suggesting for a moment that using an ioniser
is a substitute for proper breaks and adequate rest, but we can
say from both our own anecdotal evidence and from independent research
that negative ions can improve driver response times.
In 2002, Toyota carried out a study, the purpose of which
was to investigate the influence of negative air ions on drivers'
mental stress and fatigue. They concluded that ... "negative

The effect of negative air ions on these gases is complex,
but for example with continued exposure to negative oxygen ions,
carbon monoxide becomes oxidised to carbon dioxide.
